How to build a website online?

Many of us want to have a website online because we recognise the online potential for customers.
Realising that you need a website to engage with people online and get potential customers is the first step.

Many businesses engage a website building company to build their site and that is usually what they get a website online.
The companies that build the site, just make it look nice for you but usually don't tell you about what you need to do to drive traffic to your site.

Being able to retain the traffic and giving your visitors a good user experience is essential to converting them to customers.
And that is the main reason why you want to have a website in the first place.

Many people build a website and let's face it, it is not that hard to do nowadays. It is not the website part that is the difficult thing to do anymore. It is the marketing of your website that is important.

Let's see what are the important steps that you require to create a converting website and the importance here is converting. There are plenty of sites that don't get any traffic and do not rank at all! You don't want to be one of them!

Important questions to ask for creating a converting website!

What do I want to promote on my website?

To start a website online you want to make sure you are clear on what you want to promote with your site.
Too many people just jump in and start building their website, they haven't made a plan of action.

I know it is exciting when you create your first website with a web hosting company. You pick your domain name and usually, you don't think it through so we end up with a crappy one. Then you buy the domain name for a year, so you just wasted your first $15-$20 online.

Next, you jump in to choose your theme and create your website through an automated process. Voila, your site is live!
Few that wasn't too hard! So you jump in and start building your pages and then it hits you...

I don't really know what I am doing! No worries you jump on YouTube and start watching how to build your site. You get excited again because it isn't as hard as you thought it would be.

Now let me ask you, what do you think is wrong with this approach? I have been through this process myself many times before I realised that making a plan was the better option.

If you jump in before you get a clear understanding of what it is that you want your website to do, you will get sidetracked and lose a lot of time and energy doing it. And yes you will learn from your mistakes along the way, which is a bonus.

Making a plan or a specification of what it is that you want your website to do is paramount to creating a converting website.

I also realise that many of you have no idea how to do this but don't worry I will show below. Just read on and you will find out.

How do I research a nice?

You are probably wondering what nice you can use for your site? It is important that you choose a nice that has your interest or that you are really passionate about!

Why do you ask? Well to create authentic content ( no copying and pasting other peoples content) it is easier for you if you have an interest in the matter. Preferably a passion!

Ok, say you have a passion for fishing. If you just create a website that is for fishing in general, it will be hard to rank it.
This is where we need to find a NICE and there are many within Fishing. Just think about it.

You can fly fish, beach fish, boat fish, freshwater fish, saltwater fish, use live bait, use lures, etc, etc.
How do you research if the nice is a good one?

I use a special keyword research tool for that called Jaaxy. This tool allows you to find keywords or keyword phrases for you to use with your posts but it also allows you to find relevant domain names that you can use for your site.

So it all starts with an idea for a website, you then research the best way to go about that idea with Jaaxy.
You can try it below or you can read my post on "How to learn keyword research?"

Who do you Host with?

Not all hosting platforms are the same. There are lots of hosting platforms that compete on price but the service and help are not good. You usually pay for hosting for every site and every domain.

You are not allowed to try first and decide later. Then there are the free website platforms that you can hosts with but there is a payoff you get ads on your site that you can't control.

And then there is SiteRubix it is a hosting platform that we use with the Wealthy Affiliate platform. You can join for free and you can build two WordPress websites and get two domain names.

On top of that, they have got excellent training on how you can find your nice and how you go about creating your website with content. If you are interested you can read my post on Wealthy Affiliate here.

I host several sites with Wealthy Affiliate and I am a premium member with them. With their premium membership, you get 25 websites and 25 domain names for free and loads of tools, training and support. You can read all about it in my post.

What Domain name do you choose?

domain name

Choosing a domain name is an important aspect of your website. Ultimately you want to have a .com site.
In my opinion, it is important that you research your domain name before you decide on one.

Jaaxy is an excellent tool for that, you can research the nice that you want to create your website for and can find an excellent domain name with it as well.

I have included it here for you to have a try. When you join Wealthy Affiliate for free you get limited access to Jaaxy.
When you join Premium membership you get the Jaaxy lite version, which is sufficient to start your business with until you start making money online.

What website builder do you use?

There are many website builders that you can use to build your website with. They all have pros and cons attached to them.
The website builder that I prefer is WordPress because it is an open-source platform. It is free and specially designed to create content.

The benefit of being open source is that it will exist forever, other website builders that are business based can go bankrupt and the support will cease to exist and face out.

WordPress has over 73 million sites on the net and is well suited to small to medium online businesses. It uses plugins to be able to create all sorts of features that you want on your site.

What is important for Website Design?

One of the biggest problems, when you start designing your website, is that you don't realise that you make your site with things you like. This isn't necessarily what your visitors like.

So before you start with building your site you should be aware of the following:

  1. Colours, you use on your site and in your logo! Colours we associate with certain meanings in our subconscious mind. If your text doesn't match the colour, you will be conveying a confusing message.
  2. Size of your font that you use, bigger fonts 18-22px will make your text more readable.
  3. The length of your sentences, the optimum lengths is between 2.5 and 3 Alphabets (78 char max)
  4. The length of your paragraphs, keep your paragraphs short (2 lines), more white space between your paragraphs makes it easier to read for your audience.
  5. Gimmicks, nowadays you can use a lot of gimmicks to get the attention of your visitors. Your content is what the visitor is after not the flashing bells and whistles. There is a fine line to walk here. Too many popups and your visitor gets distracted and leaves. Don't go overboard, it will drive your customers away.
  6. Navigation between pages and posts, make it easy for the visitor to navigate your site. To many choices makes it difficult for your visitors. So keep it simple! Have a look at my site and you can tell me in the comments if it is working for you or not!
  7. Look and feel of your site overall your pages and posts. It is important that keep a consistent layout of your site over all the pages and posts. This looks more professional and helps with the branding of your site in the future.
  8. Images, use images to break up the text and make your content easier to read.
  9. Video is another form of content that you can use on your site. If you use a lot of videos, you should invest in a video plugin. I have got a few videos on my site, they are located in the header, you can watch them and see how the plugin works.
  10. Headers, the use of headers in your posts should go from H1 in the title and H2/H3 as subtitles. Always remember headers go down in size!
  11. Writing content, use authentic writing for your site, no copying and pasting. Google will penalise you for doing so. In your content you want to use keywords and words that get people to acts.
  12. Using SEO to rank your site on google.

Website design is definitely a skill that you need to learn. At Wealthy Affiliate, we have got excellent pieces of training that will cover these topics and much more!

How to retain your website visitors and give them a good experience?

Retain Customers

Your website rankings depend on this, the longer you have visitors stay on your site, the better Google will view your site.
The number 1 priority for Google is to give the people that do a search the information that they are after.

So that is reflected in the time they spend on your website, the longer people stay on your site the more authority your site will gain. More authority means higher rankings, higher rankings mean more traffic, more traffic means more conversions and more conversions means more sales.

So how do you retain your visitors on your site? You have to offer them a good user experience through your content.
Your content needs to be easy to read and engaging, it needs to have the information what the visitor is looking for.

Many of the points I mentioned foe website design are relevant here.

Why do I need a call to action?

Call to Action

What is a call to action? A call to action is an event that you want your potential customer to take. Like when a visitor comes to a store and he looks at the merchandise and it says "Buy one, get one free".

This is a call to action, something you want the visitor to do. Online it might be "Subscribe to my newsletter" or "Get Started". The call to action is the part where the visitor shows his interest in your website.

The call to action depends on what type of website you are creating and the purpose of the website.

Not having a call of action is like having a shop without products, it is the way you can get your visitors to buy in on what it is that you are offering or at least leave their details (email) so you can get back at them.

What is organic traffic versus paid traffic?

Organic Paid

Organic traffic is traffic that comes from the search engines, Google will match the words that someone types in with the content on the site. There are about 200 different criteria that google filters with.

The most important one is good authentic content that matches the search criteria, another one, has your site authority.

To get organic traffic you need to create authentic content, this can be text, images, video, sound, comments, etc.

Having a mixture is usually a good start but Google also looks at you regularly adding content to your site.

When you are giving your visitors a good experience then you can convert some of your visitors to costumers and monetise your site.

Paid traffic, on the other hand, is driving visitors to your site by buying an advertisement on search engines, Facebook, adds on other websites, etc. This is only effective if your website or posts are already converting.

If you haven't got any conversions yet from your organic traffic or you are not getting the organic traffic through the search engines, you then need to reassess the content that you have got and make changes accordingly.

Paying for traffic at this stage will only result in you wasting your money. Getting your website converting with organic traffic is the start and then you can use paid traffic to excel things.

How do you rank your Website on Google first page?

Rank on Google

There are many first pages on Google and it depends on what the keywords are the person is searching for.
How well your content matches their search criteria and what authority your site has got.

It also takes time for google to find you and index your content. If you have got an authority site google already knows that you are putting out good content and you get ranked quicker. So it takes time for your website to build a relationship with the search engines.

The more you are active with your site, with content like posts, video, comments and replies, the more Google will recognise that your site is important and it will display higher in its rankings.

SEO (search engine optimization) will help you rank higher, but remember with your content you are communicating with people, not robots. Just writing keywords in your text and it doesn't make sense is not going to work for you. It has to be done in a natural way.

The other way to get on top of the first page in Google is to buy the spot through advertising but if your website content is not converting you will lose your money quick smart. I have done that and it didn't work for me. I guess it is the learning money that you pay.

How do I use social media to drive customers to my website?

The good thing about social media is that you can use it to increase the visitors to your site and people can share your message over social media when they like it.

You can advertise your posts on social media and drive traffic to your website. It works and you have special websites where you can schedule your posts to be posted on social media and rotate them around over time.

You don't need to physically post your posts one by one on all the social media platforms anymore.

Does paid advertising for your website work?

Quick answer YES and NO! It depends on your website! Is it set up to convert visitors to customers. If it is not set up in that way, paid advertising won't work for you.

That is why it is important for you to be able to learn while you are building your site and have skill full people to help you with the challenges that you are facing.

  1. Eric, I just wanted to pop in here because I wanted to let your readers know that I am a testimonial for the Wealthy Affiliate program.  So, I am a single mother, and I was tired of being away from my children at a job, and I started researching onilne for ways to make money.  I came across info on affiliate marketing, but I have to tell you, I really struggled with it until I found an article like this one on Wealthy Affiliate and I signed up for their free version.  It didn't even take me a week to know I had found the real deal, and I became a Premium member.  I have never looked back.  My business has gone through the roof!

    1. Hi Babsie, thanks for your comment. The same has happened to me. It is amazing if you just put your mind to it and just get going and don't stop what you can actually achieve.

  2. Hello Eric, you have here a well written and detailed article on how to build a website online. I must confess that I have not seen anyone give so much information and break it down so well. I am also a member of wealthy affiliate and building a website with the platform has never been so easy with all the good tools put in place to make it as easy as possible and you shave discussed them here. Using a WordPress site is really cool and easy again. For support, wealthy affiliate is top notch and one can get info from the community too. Nice one!

  3. This is one of the topic I like to chip into so much. Building an online business is not rocket science indeed. I like what you said jumping in without a clear understanding of how things work and what goes into what. This is how a lot of people get burned out fast, fail and then quit.

You also mentioned having passion for something that does not ensure you will rank for that topic on Google. This is a must-read article

I hope that anyone looking to start on online business will stumble on this article and get a clear perspective about how to start and what to do first.

    1. Hi Richard, thank you for the comments and that is exactly why I write posts like this. I want people to understand what it is that they get involved in so they can plan to make it happen.

  4. This is absolutely brilliant, many people find it very difficult to build a proper website, this tools you have outlined here are top notch and should be considered while building a professional website, as we could be doing things the wrong way and wouldn't know about it but I'm glad this post is going to help put things in check. Thanks for sharing.

  5. It is a highly impressive and informative review on building a website online.

As you have mentioned, Wealthy Affiliate got the right infrastructure and pieces of training to build money making website.

I have built my website and I am not a techie person. As I build my experience here I see my website needs more features to be added to be attractive.

My posts are ranking on page 2 and 3 or even worse in Google except one or 2 on page 1 while I try hard to write good posts and doing online SEO.

Your review definitely brushed up my knowledge to perform better.
