Many of us want to have a website online because we recognise the online potential for customers.
Realising that you need a website to engage with people online and get potential customers is the first step.
Many businesses engage a website building company to build their site and that is usually what they get a website online.
The companies that build the site, just make it look nice for you but usually don't tell you about what you need to do to drive traffic to your site.
Being able to retain the traffic and giving your visitors a good user experience is essential to converting them to customers.
And that is the main reason why you want to have a website in the first place.
Many people build a website and let's face it, it is not that hard to do nowadays. It is not the website part that is the difficult thing to do anymore. It is the marketing of your website that is important.
Let's see what are the important steps that you require to create a converting website and the importance here is converting. There are plenty of sites that don't get any traffic and do not rank at all! You don't want to be one of them!
To start a website online you want to make sure you are clear on what you want to promote with your site.
Too many people just jump in and start building their website, they haven't made a plan of action.
I know it is exciting when you create your first website with a web hosting company. You pick your domain name and usually, you don't think it through so we end up with a crappy one. Then you buy the domain name for a year, so you just wasted your first $15-$20 online.
Next, you jump in to choose your theme and create your website through an automated process. Voila, your site is live!
Few that wasn't too hard! So you jump in and start building your pages and then it hits you...
I don't really know what I am doing! No worries you jump on YouTube and start watching how to build your site. You get excited again because it isn't as hard as you thought it would be.
Now let me ask you, what do you think is wrong with this approach? I have been through this process myself many times before I realised that making a plan was the better option.
If you jump in before you get a clear understanding of what it is that you want your website to do, you will get sidetracked and lose a lot of time and energy doing it. And yes you will learn from your mistakes along the way, which is a bonus.
Making a plan or a specification of what it is that you want your website to do is paramount to creating a converting website.
I also realise that many of you have no idea how to do this but don't worry I will show below. Just read on and you will find out.
You are probably wondering what nice you can use for your site? It is important that you choose a nice that has your interest or that you are really passionate about!
Why do you ask? Well to create authentic content ( no copying and pasting other peoples content) it is easier for you if you have an interest in the matter. Preferably a passion!
Ok, say you have a passion for fishing. If you just create a website that is for fishing in general, it will be hard to rank it.
This is where we need to find a NICE and there are many within Fishing. Just think about it.
You can fly fish, beach fish, boat fish, freshwater fish, saltwater fish, use live bait, use lures, etc, etc.
How do you research if the nice is a good one?
I use a special keyword research tool for that called Jaaxy. This tool allows you to find keywords or keyword phrases for you to use with your posts but it also allows you to find relevant domain names that you can use for your site.
So it all starts with an idea for a website, you then research the best way to go about that idea with Jaaxy.
You can try it below or you can read my post on "How to learn keyword research?"
Not all hosting platforms are the same. There are lots of hosting platforms that compete on price but the service and help are not good. You usually pay for hosting for every site and every domain.
You are not allowed to try first and decide later. Then there are the free website platforms that you can hosts with but there is a payoff you get ads on your site that you can't control.
And then there is SiteRubix it is a hosting platform that we use with the Wealthy Affiliate platform. You can join for free and you can build two WordPress websites and get two domain names.
On top of that, they have got excellent training on how you can find your nice and how you go about creating your website with content. If you are interested you can read my post on Wealthy Affiliate here.
I host several sites with Wealthy Affiliate and I am a premium member with them. With their premium membership, you get 25 websites and 25 domain names for free and loads of tools, training and support. You can read all about it in my post.
Choosing a domain name is an important aspect of your website. Ultimately you want to have a .com site.
In my opinion, it is important that you research your domain name before you decide on one.
Jaaxy is an excellent tool for that, you can research the nice that you want to create your website for and can find an excellent domain name with it as well.
I have included it here for you to have a try. When you join Wealthy Affiliate for free you get limited access to Jaaxy.
When you join Premium membership you get the Jaaxy lite version, which is sufficient to start your business with until you start making money online.
There are many website builders that you can use to build your website with. They all have pros and cons attached to them.
The website builder that I prefer is WordPress because it is an open-source platform. It is free and specially designed to create content.
The benefit of being open source is that it will exist forever, other website builders that are business based can go bankrupt and the support will cease to exist and face out.
WordPress has over 73 million sites on the net and is well suited to small to medium online businesses. It uses plugins to be able to create all sorts of features that you want on your site.
One of the biggest problems, when you start designing your website, is that you don't realise that you make your site with things you like. This isn't necessarily what your visitors like.
So before you start with building your site you should be aware of the following:
Website design is definitely a skill that you need to learn. At Wealthy Affiliate, we have got excellent pieces of training that will cover these topics and much more!
Your website rankings depend on this, the longer you have visitors stay on your site, the better Google will view your site.
The number 1 priority for Google is to give the people that do a search the information that they are after.
So that is reflected in the time they spend on your website, the longer people stay on your site the more authority your site will gain. More authority means higher rankings, higher rankings mean more traffic, more traffic means more conversions and more conversions means more sales.
So how do you retain your visitors on your site? You have to offer them a good user experience through your content.
Your content needs to be easy to read and engaging, it needs to have the information what the visitor is looking for.
Many of the points I mentioned foe website design are relevant here.
What is a call to action? A call to action is an event that you want your potential customer to take. Like when a visitor comes to a store and he looks at the merchandise and it says "Buy one, get one free".
This is a call to action, something you want the visitor to do. Online it might be "Subscribe to my newsletter" or "Get Started". The call to action is the part where the visitor shows his interest in your website.
The call to action depends on what type of website you are creating and the purpose of the website.
Not having a call of action is like having a shop without products, it is the way you can get your visitors to buy in on what it is that you are offering or at least leave their details (email) so you can get back at them.
Organic traffic is traffic that comes from the search engines, Google will match the words that someone types in with the content on the site. There are about 200 different criteria that google filters with.
The most important one is good authentic content that matches the search criteria, another one, has your site authority.
To get organic traffic you need to create authentic content, this can be text, images, video, sound, comments, etc.
Having a mixture is usually a good start but Google also looks at you regularly adding content to your site.
When you are giving your visitors a good experience then you can convert some of your visitors to costumers and monetise your site.
Paid traffic, on the other hand, is driving visitors to your site by buying an advertisement on search engines, Facebook, adds on other websites, etc. This is only effective if your website or posts are already converting.
If you haven't got any conversions yet from your organic traffic or you are not getting the organic traffic through the search engines, you then need to reassess the content that you have got and make changes accordingly.
Paying for traffic at this stage will only result in you wasting your money. Getting your website converting with organic traffic is the start and then you can use paid traffic to excel things.
There are many first pages on Google and it depends on what the keywords are the person is searching for.
How well your content matches their search criteria and what authority your site has got.
It also takes time for google to find you and index your content. If you have got an authority site google already knows that you are putting out good content and you get ranked quicker. So it takes time for your website to build a relationship with the search engines.
The more you are active with your site, with content like posts, video, comments and replies, the more Google will recognise that your site is important and it will display higher in its rankings.
SEO (search engine optimization) will help you rank higher, but remember with your content you are communicating with people, not robots. Just writing keywords in your text and it doesn't make sense is not going to work for you. It has to be done in a natural way.
The other way to get on top of the first page in Google is to buy the spot through advertising but if your website content is not converting you will lose your money quick smart. I have done that and it didn't work for me. I guess it is the learning money that you pay.
The good thing about social media is that you can use it to increase the visitors to your site and people can share your message over social media when they like it.
You can advertise your posts on social media and drive traffic to your website. It works and you have special websites where you can schedule your posts to be posted on social media and rotate them around over time.
You don't need to physically post your posts one by one on all the social media platforms anymore.
Quick answer YES and NO! It depends on your website! Is it set up to convert visitors to customers. If it is not set up in that way, paid advertising won't work for you.
That is why it is important for you to be able to learn while you are building your site and have skill full people to help you with the challenges that you are facing.
How to build a website online involves many things that you need to skill upon, you will also need tools that help you make your life easier. You see many hosting companies show you how easy it is for you to create a website online.
